The DIY Passenger Seat Desk
An office with a 5 star window view. Most of the time...
As a software engineer and a content creator, having a place to work is an absolute necessity. It was a must to have a desk that was comfortable, and wouldn’t give me carpel tunnel after a few days of use. After countless hours of pondering, I came up with this idea.
The first step was to figure out how to attach the desk to the dash in some way. Luckily, the GX is becoming a popular “overlanding” vehicle and various universal dash mounts have started to be available on the market.
The one I chose is the “GXPAM” made by Expedition Essentials. This required some drilling of holes into the center console, but allowed for a very stable platform. There are other similar dash mounting solutions for other vehicles, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t own a GX!
The next step was to figure out a way to attach a desk to it…
I measured out a piece of wood that would be comfortable to fit a laptop with enough space to rest my wrists. On one side of the desk, I attached a RAM Mount, to connect to my dash. On the other side, a simple L bracket to rest against the armrest.
The desk has a two points of contact. One on the armrest, and the other is against the dash with the RAM PVC arm. I cut this arm to length to properly level the desk.
The final piece of my office, is the RAM 12” tablet mount. This fits my 12.9” iPad comfortably, and I can use it as a second monitor for my laptop using airplay.
